However, the game includes a new mechanic to the series known as "Unite Moves", which are moves similar to Ultimate moves in other MOBAs, and are unique to each Pokémon and are unlocked at certain levels depending on the Pokémon. The "type" system common in other Pokémon games, a system similar to rock paper scissors that determines each Pokémon's effectiveness against others, is absent from Pokémon Unite. The Pokémon may become stronger and gain access to new "moves" by capturing wild Pokémon, helping defeat wild Pokémon that their teammate captures, and knocking out enemy player Pokémon. Finally, Rotom, which appears in the top lane, goes on a path to the nearest opposing goal when defeated, attacking enemy Pokémon along the way and removes 20 points when possessing the targeted goal zone, as well as making it undefended.Įach player starts a match controlling a relatively weak Pokémon. Zapdos in the centre of the map, only appears in the Final Stretch (the last 2 minutes of a match, which also doubles all points scored), gives the whole team 15 points and makes all enemy goal zones undefended, it also strikes all alive enemy players with a thunderboltafter being defeated. Drednaw in the bottom lane, gives the whole team which defeated it a shield and some experience points. Defeating one of these Pokémon will provide the team which defeated it a unique effect based on what Pokémon was defeated. Destroying a goal removes a respective section of the "speed flux zone".Īt certain times in each match, stronger wild Pokémon will appear. When players try to go past an enemy goal zone when it is active, a zone called the "speed flux zone", slows down the movement speed of players attempting to travel in it, but increases the movement speed of enemy Pokémon, and vice versa. Each goal zone can hold a certain number of these points, and once the limit is reached, it will be destroyed. Players can hold between 30 and 50 points depending on the stage of the game and their level. A goal zone can be made undefended, which will allow players to instantly score by either Zapdos or Rotom. However, scoring takes a specific amount of time depending on the amount of points the player is carrying and if the players get hit by an attack while scoring, they will be interrupted, and must try again.

Players collect points by defeating non-player character "wild" Pokémon (referred to as "catching" in the game) and scoring in one of the goals. The main game map, Aeos Island, is split into two halves, with multiple scoring goals in each. The Quick Battle game mode has 4 different maps, each with some changes to the rules, size of map and species of wild Pokèmon. There are limited time maps, and a game mode called Quick Battle, which is five minutes long with four players (sometimes 3) on each team. If there is a tie, the team that scored the tied score first wins. Surrendering can only happen if the match reaches the halfway mark, and if a majority vote among the team members is reached. A team can also win if the opposing team surrenders. Each match is limited to 10 minutes in duration, and the team with the highest total score by the end of each match wins.
