![]() The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 made the first major changes to school meals in 15 years with the intention of raising a healthier generation of students. The current meal standards align school meals with the latest nutrition science and ensure students are offered both fruits and vegetables every day of the week, whole grain-rich foods and only fat-free or low-fat (1%) milk varieties. These standards also require schools to serve students a meal that falls within an appropriate calorie range based on the age of students and limits the amounts of saturated fat and sodium served. For lunch, OVS is mandatory at the senior high level and optional below the senior high school level. For breakfast, OVS is optional at all levels.
